Axon Pruning: C. elegans Makes the Cut
نویسنده
چکیده
Axon pruning has recently been described in the simple nervous system of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Generating excess processes and pruning may be a phylogenetically conserved feature reflecting a flexibility to modify neural circuits.

Distinct cellular and molecular mechanisms mediate initial axon development and adult-stage axon regeneration in C. elegans.
The molecular and cellular mechanisms that allow adult-stage neurons to regenerate following damage are poorly understood. Recently, axons of motoneurons and mechanosensory neurons in adult C. elegans were found to regrow after being snipped by femtosecond laser ablation. Here, we explore the molecular determinants of adult-stage axon regeneration using the AVM mechanosensory neurons. The first...
متن کاملEssential Role of the Apoptotic Cell Engulfment Genes draper and ced-6 in Programmed Axon Pruning during Drosophila Metamorphosis
Axon pruning is a common phenomenon in neural circuit development. Previous studies demonstrate that the engulfing action of glial cells is essential in this process. The underlying molecular mechanisms, however, remain unknown. We show that draper (drpr) and ced-6, which are essential for the clearance of apoptotic cells in C. elegans, function in the glial engulfment of larval axons during Dr...
متن کاملStereotyped Pruning of Long Hippocampal Axon Branches Triggered by Retraction Inducers of the Semaphorin Family
Like naturally occurring neuronal cell death, stereotyped pruning of long axon branches to temporary targets is a widespread regressive phenomenon in the developing mammalian brain that helps sculpt the pattern of neuronal connections. The mechanisms controlling stereotyped pruning are, however, poorly understood. Here, we provide evidence that semaphorins, activating the Plexin-A3 receptor, fu...
متن کاملCaenorhabditis elegans neuronal regeneration is influenced by life stage, ephrin signaling, and synaptic branching.
We previously reported functional regeneration of Caenorhabditis elegans motor neurons after femtosecond laser axotomy. We report here that multiple neuronal types can regrow after laser axotomy using a variety of lasers. The precise pattern of regrowth varies with cell type, stage of animal, and position of axotomy. Mechanosensory axons cut in late larval or adult stages displayed extensive re...
متن کاملAxons Degenerate in the Absence of Mitochondria in C. elegans
Many neurodegenerative disorders are associated with mitochondrial defects [1-3]. Mitochondria can play an active role in degeneration by releasing reactive oxygen species and apoptotic factors [4-7]. Alternatively, mitochondria can protect axons from stress and insults, for example by buffering calcium [8]. Recent studies manipulating mitochondria lend support to both of these models [9-13]. H...
